Lesson #3: Making Predictions

Outcome: I can explain and support probable outcomes of the coming years.

Instructions: Look through this list of predictions for the next few years. Choose two that you agree with and give your rationale in a four-minute recording..

  1. I predict that within the next few years, I'll be able to automate my grocery shopping entirely. With advances in AI and robotics, I can see myself simply adding items to a digital list, and drones or delivery robots will take care of the rest, bringing my groceries right to my doorstep.

  2. I foresee that wearable technology will become even more integrated into my daily life. Soon, I'll have smart clothing that not only monitors my health but also adjusts its temperature and comfort level based on my body's needs and the surrounding environment.

  3. I predict that virtual reality will revolutionize the way I exercise. Instead of going to a gym, I'll be able to put on a VR headset and participate in immersive fitness classes or explore virtual landscapes while getting a full-body workout.

  4. With the rise of autonomous vehicles, I anticipate that commuting will become much more productive and enjoyable. Instead of being stuck behind the wheel in traffic, I'll be able to relax, work, or even sleep during my daily commute, thanks to self-driving cars.

  5. I predict that holographic technology will transform the way I communicate with others. Instead of video calls on a screen, I'll be able to have lifelike holographic meetings with colleagues and friends, making remote interactions feel more personal and engaging.

  6. I foresee a future where my home is fully connected and responsive to my needs. Smart home systems will anticipate my preferences, adjusting the lighting, temperature, and other settings automatically to create the perfect environment for relaxation, productivity, or socializing.

  7. I predict that artificial intelligence will become increasingly integrated into my work life, assisting me with tasks such as scheduling, data analysis, and decision-making. AI-powered virtual assistants will become indispensable collaborators, helping me be more efficient and effective in my job.

  8. With advancements in renewable energy and sustainability efforts, I foresee that my home will become completely self-sufficient in terms of energy production. Solar panels, wind turbines, and other renewable energy sources will power my household, reducing my carbon footprint and energy costs.

  9. I predict that personalized medicine will revolutionize healthcare, allowing treatments to be tailored to my unique genetic makeup and health profile. With advances in genomics and precision medicine, I'll receive targeted therapies that are more effective and have fewer side effects.

  10. Finally, I anticipate that the gig economy will continue to grow, offering me more opportunities for flexible work arrangements and supplemental income. Whether it's driving for a ride-sharing service, freelancing on a project-by-project basis, or renting out my property on a short-term basis, I'll have more ways than ever to earn money on my own terms.

Sarah: Around 7:00 PM. Oh, and feel free to bring a dish if you'd like. Juan: Great, I'll see you then. I'll bring some tacos! Sarah: Tacos? Oh, um, thanks, but I was thinking more along the lines of appetizers or snacks. Juan: Oh, I see. In Mexico, bringing tacos to a gathering is common, but I can bring something else if you prefer. Sarah: No, no, it's okay! Tacos sound delicious. See you at 7:00!

Dialogue 2: Liam (Irish): So, I've been reading about this Irish festival called St. Patrick's Day. It sounds like a blast! Hiroko (Japanese): Oh, really? What do you do during this festival? Liam: Well, we dress in green, drink Guinness, and celebrate Irish culture with parades and music. Hiroko: That sounds like fun! In Japan, we have festivals too, but we don't usually associate them with specific colors or drinks. It's more about traditional rituals and ceremonies. Liam: Ah, I see. Well, if you ever visit Ireland during St. Patrick's Day, you'll have to join in the festivities! Hiroko: I'd love to experience it someday. Maybe I'll bring some green tea to celebrate with you!

Dialogue 3: Carlos (Brazilian): Hey, Anna, I heard you're planning a trip to Brazil. That's awesome! Anna (British): Yes, I'm really excited to explore your country! I've been learning some Portuguese phrases to get by. Carlos: That's great to hear! Brazilian people love it when foreigners try to speak Portuguese. It shows respect for our culture. Anna: I'm glad to hear that! I want to be respectful and immerse myself in the local culture as much as possible. Carlos: Definitely! Just one thing though, be careful with the "ok" gesture. Anna: The "ok" gesture? What's wrong with that? Carlos: In Brazil, it can be interpreted as a rude gesture, similar to giving someone the middle finger. Anna: Oh, I had no idea! Thanks for letting me know. I'll be sure to avoid using that gesture during my trip. Carlos: No problem! I'm sure you'll have a fantastic time in Brazil, just watch out for those cultural nuances.
