Lesson #1: Directions
Outcome: I can instruct someone on how to get to my apartment from a train station.
Instructions: Make a list of 10 ways that a visitor to your town could travel from your accommodations to the closest train or bus station.
Lesson #2: Family
Outcome: I can write a letter to a parent expressing gratitude.
Instructions: Write a letter to one or both of your parents or another family member showing gratitude (100-150 words).
Lesson #3: Movies
Outcome: I can write a content warning for a film.
Instructions: Think of a movie that you have watched. Write a content warning. Write five points about the content of a film that a viewer should be aware of (eg. swearing, smoking).
Lesson #4: Food
Outcome: I can write a review of a restaurant.
Instructions: Write a review for a restaurant that you have visited (50-100 words).
Lesson #5: Work
Outcome: I can write a short cover letter applying for a position.
Instructions: Find a job you would like if you were job-hunting. Write a short cover letter for the position (100-150 words)
Lesson #6: Fashion
Outcome: I can write an email to a company asking for a refund.
Instructions: Imagine that you have bought a product and wish to receive a refund for it. Write a short letter requesting the refund. (100-150 words)
Lesson #7: Tourism
Outcome: I can write a letter to a friend planning an upcoming trip.
Instructions: Think of a destination you have travelled to. Write a list of five recommendations to a friend who will travel there.
Lesson #8: Weather
Outcome: I can write a text to a friend advising them on what to wear in respect to the weather.
Instructions: Imagine a friend is visiting your town today. Write a text advising them on what to wear in respect to the weather.
Lesson #9: Games
Outcome: I can write a letter to a video-game company requesting an update.
Instructions: Think of a game or video game you have played and enjoyed. Think about one change that could make it better. Write a short letter to the game company recommending them to update the game based on the update.
Lesson #10: Media
Outcome: I can write reasons why one likes a certain news outlet.
Instructions: Think about your favourite news outlet (mainstream or otherwise). Make a list of reasons why this is your favourite one.
Lesson #11: Canada
Outcome: I can write a letter to a friend who lives in Canada and arrange a visit with them.
Instructions: Think of or imagine a friend that you have who lives in Canada. Write a letter to them trying to arrange a visit to them.
Lesson #12: Living Spaces
Outcome: I can write a description for an apartment rental.
Instructions: Find an advertisement for an apartment rental online (eg. on Air BnB). Write a 100-word advertisements for this apartment.
Lesson #13: Electronics
Outcome: I can write a list of necessary vs. luxury items.
Instructions: Go to Google and search for Christmas wish lists. From the lists, sort 20 of the items into necessary items and luxury items.
Lesson #14: Television
Outcome: I can improve a TV or movie script.
Instructions: Go to a website with TV scripts like this one. Choose one of the TV scripts for a show you have watched. Find a spot or multiple spots where the script or story could be improved. Justify your opinion.
Lesson #15: Sickness and Health
Outcome: I can ask a manager to take a sick day due to an illness.
Instructions: Write a 100-word letter to a manager asking them to take a day off.
Lesson #16: Nature
Outcome: I can write a description for a meditation video.
Instructions: Find a meditation or mindfulness video on Youtube. For that video, watch it and then write a 3-sentence description of it.
Lesson #17: Sports
Outcome: I can write a list of rules of a familiar sport.
Instructions: Think of a popular sport in your country. Write 5-10 rules for that sport.
Lesson #18: Music
Outcome: I can write a set of rhymes about a random topic.
Instructions: Write a poem of 4-8 lines about the topic of your choice.
Lesson #19: Clothing
Outcome: I can write an email to a clothing company asking for a refund.
Instructions: Find a clothing item on Amazon. Then, write an email asking for a refund for that item.
Lesson #20: Emotions
Outcome: I can write a list of ways to feel better after a difficult day.
Instructions: Write a list of 10 things that improve your mood.
Lesson #21: Calendars
Outcome: I can write a list of important dates in the coming month.
Instructions: Write a list of things you need to do in the upcoming month.
Lesson #22: History
Outcome: I can write about a national hero of one’s country.
Instructions: Write a 100-word description about a national hero in your country.
Lesson #23: Immigration
Outcome: I can write about the immigration process to a country.
Instructions: Research and write (in point form) about the immigration process for your country.
Lesson #24: Hobbies
Outcome: I can write a hobby-based bucket list.
Instructions: Write a list of hobbies you would like to try.
Lesson #25: Furniture
Outcome: I can write a list of ways to improve the aesthetic of one’s home.
Instructions: Write a list of three changes you have made or plan to make to your home.
