Instructions: Read the passage and respond to the question which follow.

Passage:

In every family, each member plays a unique and important role. Let's explore the roles of different family members within a typical household.

Parents are the leaders of the family. They provide guidance, support, and love to their children. Mothers often take on the role of caregiver, nurturing and taking care of the family's needs. They may cook meals, clean the house, and help with homework. Fathers, on the other hand, are often seen as the protectors and providers. They work hard to support the family financially and ensure their safety and well-being.

Children have their roles too. Older siblings may take on responsibilities such as helping with household chores or looking after younger siblings. They may also serve as role models for their younger brothers and sisters. Younger children, on the other hand, may receive guidance and support from their older siblings and parents as they grow and learn.

Grandparents also play an important role in many families. They often provide wisdom, experience, and unconditional love. Grandparents may help with childcare, share stories and traditions, and offer valuable advice to their children and grandchildren.

As you read this passage, think about the roles of each family member in your own family. How do they compare to the roles described here? Take some time to reflect on the dynamics of your family and the contributions each member makes to create a loving and supportive environment.

  8. How might the roles within a family change or evolve over time? Can you provide any examples from your own experience or observations?
  9. What do you think are some of the benefits of having a strong family support system with clearly defined roles for each member?
  10. How does understanding the roles of family members contribute to a harmonious and cohesive family environment?

Instructions: Read the following article and respond to the comprehension questions.

Local Farmers Report Record Harvest Despite Severe Drought

In a surprising turn of events, local farmers in the region have reported record-breaking harvests this year, despite facing one of the most severe droughts in recent history. The drought, which experts predicted would devastate crops and lead to widespread agricultural losses, seems to have had little to no effect on the productivity of farms in the area.

"We were expecting the worst," said John Smith, a veteran farmer in the community. "But somehow, our crops have thrived like never before. It's like the drought never happened."

According to official reports from the Department of Agriculture, wheat, corn, and soybean yields have all exceeded expectations, with some farmers reporting yields that are double or even triple the average for this time of year.

"It's truly remarkable," remarked Sarah Johnson, an agricultural scientist at the local university. "We're still trying to understand how the crops managed to thrive under such adverse conditions."

Despite the abundance of produce, some residents remain skeptical about the reports of a record harvest.

"I don't understand how we can have a record harvest when there's been no rain for months," said Mary Jones, a local resident. "It just doesn't add up."

For now, farmers are celebrating their unexpected success and reaping the rewards of their bountiful harvests. However, questions remain about the long-term implications of such contradictory information and what it could mean for future agricultural practices in the region.

Comprehension Questions:

  1. What is the main contradiction in the news article?
  2. How do the farmers describe their harvest despite the drought?
  3. What crops are mentioned as having record yields?
  4. How do agricultural experts react to the news of the record harvest?
  5. What is one resident's reaction to the contradictory information?
  6. What are the potential long-term implications of the contradictory information?

I hope this letter finds you well! I wanted to tell you all about the camping trip I recently went on with my friends – it was absolutely amazing!

Firstly, we chose a beautiful spot in the mountains for our camping adventure. The scenery was breathtaking, with tall trees, sparkling streams, and clear blue skies all around us. We set up our tents near a cozy campfire, and it instantly felt like home.

During the day, we went hiking through the forest trails. We saw so many interesting plants and animals along the way, like colorful birds and squirrels playing in the trees. We even spotted a deer drinking from a nearby stream – it was like something out of a nature documentary!

In the evenings, we gathered around the campfire to roast marshmallows and tell stories. The crackling fire and twinkling stars overhead made for the perfect atmosphere. We laughed and joked late into the night, enjoying each other's company and the tranquility of the great outdoors.

Lesson #22: History

Outcome: I can respond to comprehension questions based on a reading about a nation’s history.

Instructions: Read the following passage and then respond to comprehension questions.

The world's youngest country, South Sudan, emerged on July 9, 2011, following decades of struggle for independence from Sudan. Its history is marked by a tumultuous journey toward self-determination, characterized by conflict, displacement, and hope for a better future.

The roots of South Sudan's quest for independence can be traced back to colonial times when Sudan was under British and Egyptian rule. Despite being culturally and ethnically distinct from the northern region, South Sudan faced marginalization and neglect from the central government in Khartoum. This fueled resentment and sparked armed resistance movements, notably the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA), which fought for autonomy and equal rights for the southern region.

After years of civil war and negotiation, a peace agreement known as the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) was signed in 2005, paving the way for a referendum on independence. In January 2011, an overwhelming majority of South Sudanese voted in favor of secession, leading to the birth of the world's youngest nation.

However, the euphoria of independence was short-lived as South Sudan soon plunged into a new cycle of violence and instability. Internal power struggles, ethnic tensions, and disputes over resources erupted into civil war in December 2013, just two years after independence. The conflict, characterized by brutal violence and human rights abuses, displaced millions of people and plunged the country into a humanitarian crisis.

Despite multiple attempts at peace negotiations and the signing of a peace agreement in 2018, stability remains elusive in South Sudan. The country continues to grapple with intercommunal violence, economic challenges, and the legacy of decades of conflict. However, there is also hope for a brighter future, as South Sudanese people remain resilient and determined to build a peaceful and prosperous nation for future generations.

As the world's youngest country, South Sudan's history serves as a reminder of the complexities of nation-building and the enduring struggle for peace and justice in the face of adversity. While the road ahead may be fraught with challenges, the people of South Sudan remain steadfast in their pursuit of a better tomorrow.

  7. Despite attempts at peace negotiations, what challenges does South Sudan continue to face in achieving stability and prosperity?
  8. What qualities do the people of South Sudan demonstrate in the face of adversity, according to the passage?
  9. What lessons can be learned from South Sudan's history as the world's youngest country?

Lesson #25: Furniture

Outcome: I can read about handyman scams and report on them.

Instructions: Read the following passage. Then, summarize the common scams and identify ways to avoid them.

Handymen are often hired to perform various tasks around the home, from simple repairs to more complex renovations. While most handymen are reputable and trustworthy, there are unfortunately some who engage in scams or unethical practices. Here are some common handyman scams to watch out for:

  1. Overcharging: One of the most common scams is overcharging for services rendered. Some unscrupulous handymen may quote a low price initially but then inflate the final bill with hidden fees or unnecessary repairs.

  2. Unnecessary Repairs: Another scam involves recommending unnecessary repairs or replacements to increase the cost of the job. For example, a handyman might claim that a simple repair requires expensive parts or additional work that isn't actually needed.

  3. Bait-and-Switch: In a bait-and-switch scam, a handyman offers a low price for a job but then pressures the homeowner into paying more once the work has begun. They may claim to encounter unexpected complications or cite additional fees not mentioned in the initial quote.

  4. Low-Quality Work: Some handymen may perform low-quality work or use subpar materials, resulting in the need for frequent repairs or replacements. This can end up costing the homeowner more money in the long run.

  5. Taking Deposits and Disappearing: Another scam involves taking a deposit for services upfront and then disappearing without completing the work. Homeowners are left with unfinished projects and little recourse for recovering their money.

  6. Door-to-Door Scams: Beware of handymen who show up unannounced at your doorstep offering to perform repairs or inspections. These individuals may be looking for vulnerable homeowners to scam or may not have the necessary qualifications or credentials to perform the work safely and effectively.

To avoid falling victim to handyman scams, it's important to do your research before hiring someone to work on your home. Ask for references, check online reviews, and get multiple quotes before making a decision. Additionally, always get a written contract outlining the scope of work, timeline, and payment terms to protect yourself in case of disputes. If something seems too good to be true or if you feel pressured by a handyman, trust your instincts and look for another provider.
